SUNSET SCHOLARS TUTORING COOPERATIVE LAUNCHES BUSINESS: A NEW MODEL TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE, QUALITY TUTORING

[Brooklyn, New York] – The world’s first tutoring cooperative opens its doors for business on September 17, 2015. Sunset Scholars boasts fifteen socially committed, academically skilled, professional tutors who look forward to serving the local community. Their diversity, both in terms of age and cultural background, positions them to address the specific needs of Sunset Park; 50% of member/owners are bilingual in Spanish/English and Chinese/English. All tutors underwent a twelve week training program and are supported by the Center for Family Life at 443 39th Street, which is where tutorial sessions will initially take place. Sunset Scholars’ services include homework help, test prep, academic tutoring in core subjects (math, writing, reading, science) as well as ESL and  accent modification.

Sunset Scholars is part of the growing cooperative movement in Sunset Park, which includes Si Se Puede!/We Can Do It cleaning, Beyond Care childcare, Golden Steps elder care, and Trusty Amigos pet care cooperatives. Together, these businesses are creating well paid jobs and helping to revitalize the labor market in Sunset Park. Reg Flowers, a Cooperative Developer at Center for Family Life, states,  “Members of worker-owned businesses are building a more just and inclusive local economy while offering services that benefit their communities. It’s about more sustainable economic development that works for everyone. Sunset Scholars – whose membership spans age, race, gender, and culture – plays a powerful role by activating young people as movement leaders and makes a connection between academic achievement, self-sufficiency and providing a much needed resource for a vulnerable population.”

Sunset Scholars member/owners include academically gifted high school students as well as  professional tutors with advanced degrees. All believe strongly in the cooperative model, which supports their mission of social equity. More information can be found at http://www.sunsetscholars.coop
