Who we are

Kris Percival

Kris Percival is a writer as well as a professional tutor. Her knitting books, published by Chronicle Books, have been praised in publications ranging from O Magazine to “The Wall Street Journal.” Kris has been a writing tutor at Saint Joseph’s College in Brooklyn since 2009 and has also served there as an adjunct English professor. In addition, she has an extensive background in teaching elementary and middle school students as well as second-language learners. Her educational credentials include a M.S. in Education (Grades 1-6) from Hunter College and an M.F.A. from Ohio University. She graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is eager to share her love of writing and learning with the community.

Stephanie Flores

Stephanie Flores is a high school graduate who will be attending Hunter College during the fall. Her main focus is to enter the medical field. Throughout high school, Stephanie had been a peer tutor in the subject of Physics along with basic mathematics. In joining Sunset Scholars, Stephanie hopes to provide affordable tutoring for those reaching out for extra help.

Cindy Cai

Cindy Cai is a high school graduate who will attend Brooklyn College this fall. She is hoping to major in education with a focus on K-8th grade. She has already gained related experience by peer tutoring her fellow classmates in English throughout her high school years. Cindy is also a strong math student, and as a member of Sunset Scholars, she will tutor in mathematics as well as ELA. Cindy joined Sunset Scholars in hopes to help people in her community. She believes everyone deserves tutoring help if needed, no matter what economic status people are in.

Shelly Auster

Shelly Auster is a Brooklyn-based writing tutor for middle school, high school and college students, as well as second-language learners. She has a PhD in Literature from SUNY Stony Brook and a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and over 10 years experience teaching writing and literature classes at such New York colleges as SUNY Stony Brook and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. Currently, she works as an in-house writing tutor at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn. She has academic articles published in Phoebe: Journal of Feminist Scholarship and Illuminations: New Readings of Virginia Woolf. She has enjoyed teaching college classes, but particularly values working one-on-one with learners of all ages, helping them overcome writing challenges and unlock their inner writing capabilities.

Carlos Martinez

Carlos Martinez is passionate about math and is available to tutor students from grades K through 11. He has several years of experience with math tutoring based on course content as well as test prep for the Algebra Regents Exam. Currently a student at Sunset Park High School, he has been on the school leadership team since his freshman year, and will graduate in 2016. He was raised in Sunset Park and knows and understands the community’s strengths as well as its challenges. Carlos is an activist and one of the founders of Sunset Park High School’s Dream Team.

Teresa Christian

Teresa Christian is an agent of change who continues to work toward empowering others to reach their goals. Mrs. Christian is currently employed with NYC Administration for Children’s Services where she is taking on the challenge of ensuring that the children of New York City are safe. In addition, Mrs. Christian has been an English as a Second Language tutor for over five years. She has taught ESL at Queens Public Library and Community Impact, which is Columbia University’s ESL Program. Her most recent achievement is the completion of the TESLA Certificate Program at the Literacy Assistance Program. Mrs. Christian has also taught leadership, communication, presentation, job readiness, and many other life skills at Queensborough Community College’s Youth Mentoring Program. Her educational credentials include a Master of Public Administration from Metropolitan College, where she graduated with Pi Alpha Alpha Honors. She earned a B.S. in Professional Studies in Human Services from Metropolitan College of New York. Currently, Mrs. Christian is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree from North Central University.
